NEW JERSEY ENACTS MANDATORY DEPRESSION SCREENING

TRENTON, NJ (April 8, 2006)-The State of New Jersey has passed a law requiring doctors and other health professionals who take care of new mothers to screen them for depression, using the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS). Its new law requires health care professionals to screen all new mothers for postpartum depression before they leave the hospital, and again after several weeks.

They are also required to educate expectant mothers about PPD and provide them with literature and information so that they can get proper treatment. This bill was given enormous support by Mary Jo Codey who served as First Lady of New Jersey from November 16, 2004 to January 17, 2006. She is the wife of former New Jersey Governor Richard Codey.

Many States are getting much more active. The State of Virginia has launched a website that trains physicians to detect and treat Perinatal Depression. The state of Virginia Health Department is again ordering FMHI brochures to be given to every new mother in the state.
