The U.S. NAVY LEADS THE WAY
BETHESDA, MD -The Family Mental Health Institute (FMHI ) has a longstanding relationship with the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) in Bethesda, Maryland. At their request Dr. Wittenberg supplied them with a plan for screening all obstetrical and pediatric admissions using the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale screening tool. Dr. Wittenberg lectured to a meeting of over two hundred personnel from four different departments of the hospital, OB, Pediatrics, Psychiatric and Psychological Service and the Social Work Department. His topic was the necessity for “Universal Depression Screening”. He was accompanied by a PPD survivor volunteer. The core personnel from the NNMC were Dianne Bloom, RN, Director of the Prenatal Assessment Center, and Cmdr. Shirley Bowens, a pediatric nurse practitioner. They participated in the Womens’ Mental Health Coalition, founded, and sponsored by FMHI, where they regularly reported on their progress and were helped by the other members to deal with problems as they arose. The program was reviewed by the Navy Bureau of Medicine and recommended to become a standard of care. The biggest news of all is that this program has been designated as a standard of care throughout the Navy.
